IN BETWEEN WORLDS

In Between Worlds is a typographic self-portrait in three display typefaces: Piragua, Borinqueneers, and Callejón. Each one responds to the tension of being Puerto Rican and American at once: citizen and outsider, island and mainland, at home in both yet fully in neither. The project uses type to confront that split identity head-on, drawing on historical references to ask what it means to serve, consume, and create between two often opposing cultures.

PIRAGUA DISPLAY

An inverted-contrast display typeface drawn from Puerto Rican advertising and consumer culture, reflecting the tension of designing inside capitalism between island and mainland.

BORINQUENEERS DISPLAY

A bold condensed display typeface honoring the 65th Infantry Regiment and family military service, quietly holding the tension of serving a country that never fully claims you.

CALLEJÓN DISPLAY

A street-signage style display typeface rooted in everyday language and street vernacular, archiving the sayings and expressions that shaped my upbringing.
